Kiteboard Open Kite

There was a buzz in the air at the KSN Surf Club in Noordwijk. With the addition of the Kiteboard Tour Europe’s (KTE), Youth European Kiteboarding Freestyle Championships to the KBO event; word had it that it was going to be a busy weekend. And by Friday evening the surf club was packed with junior riders from 9 European countries, all eager to get registerd for the IKA sanctioned event.

On Saturday morning the promised forecast had delivered, churning up the North Sea into a carpet of foam as the waves broke on Notorious Beach. The Skippers meeting was held and the first of the heats, the U16 Boys got underway.
Making the most of the conditions, the KTE race crew ploughed through the elimination rounds with the best 8 of the 19 U16 riders, going through to the quarter finals.
In the U18’s category and with 3 riders in some heats; the 15 riders were given a second chance to make it through to the quarter finals. Julian Hein from Germany took on Pepijn Herrewijnen from the Netherlands, and Rover Dullaart, also from the Netherlands took on Davide Frontanesi from Italy. Whilst the visiting riders put up a good fight, it was the Dutch lads who won a place in the semi-finals.
Sticking hard fast to a rigorous timetable, the KTE race crew managed to complete the U16’s & U18’s competition by late afternoon.
Asked to sum up the day’s action, the judges were reported as saying that the level of riding was excellent across the board. Whilst the final results of the U16’s & U18’s categories are yet to be announced, judge Ali Barrett from the UK said that there were no unfortunate or unforeseen knocks outs and that in the end consistency paid off.
It’s hoping that the lighter winds forecast for Sunday will be perfect for the Girl’s and U14’s competitions. In traditional style the first of the day’s action finished off with live music in the marque, with bands handpicked by Jordi Deckers and his House of Music team.

Sunday brought with it slightly less wind but much messier conditions on the water. With the wind direction more onshore, getting past the shore dumps proved to be a challenge for the girls and U14’s categories.

First up were the Girl’s heats where the 10 riders representing, the Netherlands, Italy, France and Spain worked hard to try to guarantee a place through to the next round. For the ExPix team Pippa Van Iersel from the Netherlands stood out; we’ll just have to wait to see if she did enough to take the win.

In the U14’s boys competition, 12 riders took part and whilst the youngsters rode hard, it was Oscar Perrineau from France who caught the eye of the ExPix crew. Again we’ll have to wait for the results to see if the judges agreed with us.

With the onshore wind, it was bone chillingly cold for the judges who were stationed 5 meters high on the Judging Tower. It’s safe to say that all the race crew, judges included breathed a sigh of relief when the last of the finals finished on Sunday evening.

But despite the cold, the sun was shining, bringing the crowds and as ever spirits were high and the KBO was well supported.

Sunday ended with live music in the marque and the legendary KBO party.
